  26.  Round 1 voting has come to a close.  We would like to thank all of the
  27.  participating Music Contest 5 judges.  It is now time to announce the
  28.  finalist songs.

  30.  Be sure to read the "Block Results" article, as it explains the new format
  31.  of the Music Contest results.

  33.  If you voted in Round 1, you will automatically be emailed your new judging
  34.  information for Round 2 in the next day or two.  Until then, it would

  82.  _____Introduction
  83.  
  84.  Only 45 out of 300+ MC5 songs made the final round.  Entrants who do not
  85.  advance will not get an exact ranking or a score for their song.  So how
  86.  will they know what their skill level is?
  87.  
  88.  _____Block Results
  89.  
  90.  The "Block Results" concept is our compromise to the two extreme solutions:
  91.  no round 1 results are released, or the full round 1 results are released.
  92.  
  93.  Each song that does not make round 2 will not get a score or rank.  Instead,
  94.  these songs will be grouped into blocks of songs.  The song blocks are built
  95.  from the "full" results, so they remain in relative order.  The song blocks
  96.  are then ranked, so entrants will now have at least a general idea of how
  97.  their song did.
  98.  
  99.  Songs in each block will be arranged in purely alphabetical order.  These
  100.  songs will be defined as being relatively close in rank.  An average score
  101.  will be listed for each block.  Average scores are not listed for the
  102.  finalist blocks.
  103.  
  104.  _____The Reasoning
  105.  
  106.  Why block results?  Why not full results?  The MC5 vote tally script easily
  107.  provides scores and rankings for every song.
  108.  
  109.  There are three primary reasons for this decision:
  110.  
  111.  1. Entries that do not make the final round technically do not deserve an
  112.     exact ranking.  Very rarely in large competitions are rankings assigned
  113.     to every single entry.  There is most often a cutoff number for entries:
  114.     a certain number of entries are selected for the final round, and the
  115.     rest are simply not ranked.
  116.  
  117.  2. Lower scores are less accurate.  When judging a song of high quality,
  118.     judges are careful to give a precise evaluation of a song.  It is easier
  119.     to find a particular quality and take some points off for a minor
  120.     deficiency.  It is harder to find a particular nuance and assign it a
  121.     fair amount of points for "reasonable effort."
  122.  
  123.     When assigning a low score, many judges are simply imprecise because they
  124.     know the exact number doesn't have much importance in the overall
  125.     results.
  126.  
  127.     Music Contest could use just one round of voting.  However, the second
  128.     voting round is used to provide extreme accuracy for the final results.
  129.     Each song in Round 1 will get about 5 to 7 votes.  In Round 2, each song
  130.     gets over 50 votes (if the voting operates as expected).
  131.  
  132.  3. Exact rankings and scores for those at the bottom of the scale can result
  133.     in ridicule.  We have a responsibility to the scene to not cause anyone
  134.     undeserved grief.  Ripping an entry deserves public ridicule, but
  135.     overestimating one's skill level is simply a matter of inexperience.
  136.  
  137.  _____The Compromise
  138.  
  139.  Why was this concept added to MC5?
  140.  
  141.  Full results and scores were given for all entries in MC3.  In MC4, with the
  142.  addition of the two-round voting process, only the round 2 finalists were
  143.  given a rank and score.  We received a significant amount of feedback from
  144.  individuals who disliked the partial MC4 results policy.
  145.  
  146.  With only partial results, competing individuals who do not make the final
  147.  round have little way of knowing how they did.  One of the fundamental
  148.  concepts of the Music Contest is to give everyone a chance to compete with
  149.  each other.  People deserve to see how well they do against composers they
  150.  might not otherwise compete against.
  151.  
  152.  _____Conclusion

  154.  This new method of providing Music Contest results benefits everyone.  The
  155.  round 2 finalists still get an exact score and ranking.  Non-finalists get
  156.  a relative ranking.  Everyone will know, to some degree, how well their song
  157.  performed.
